What is an Allergy?

In short, an allergy is an overreaction of the immune system to an allergen, which can be breathed in, eaten, or touched. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America estimates that nasal allergies alone affect approximately 50 million Americans with growing incidence. Our allergy clinic specializes in treating allergies that affect the ears, nose, and throat, including:

  • Allergic rhinitis
  • Non-allergic (vasomotor) rhinitis
  • Seasonal allergies

To identify allergens and subsequently administer proper treatment, our doctors perform skin allergy testing in our allergy clinic. This painless test is performed on the back and usually takes about one hour to complete. At the conclusion of the test, we are able to inform the patient what they are allergic to and the extent of the allergy. We test for about 40 common local allergens at our allergy clinics in Wesley Chapel and Trinity, including trees, weeds, grasses, mold, animals, and dust. Food allergies may also be tested.

Once specific allergies are identified, we will outline the multiple treatment options that can provide substantial relief. Patients who visit our allergy clinic can benefit from sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT), otherwise known as allergy drops. These under-the-tongue drops are formulated in office to address each patient’s specific allergens, and are taken at home every day. Over time, the patient will build up a tolerance to his/her allergens and enjoy relief from allergy symptoms. Other allergy treatments include allergy shots, immunizations, dietary modification, oral or nasal medications, and, in select cases, surgery.
