Also known as sinusitis, this condition occurs when the sinuses, or the hollow cavities that surround the nasal passages, become inflamed due to a virus, bacteria, or allergies. In most cases, a viral infection is to blame. Symptoms of sinus infections often include pain and tenderness around the face, nasal congestion, and thick drainage down the back of the throat or from the nose.
Treatment

- Get ample sleep and relax as much as possible. Rest is essential to fighting an infection.
- Drink plenty of water to help loosen mucus and stay hydrated. Be sure to avoid caffeinated beverages and alcohol, which may make your symptoms worse.
- Soothe facial pain by placing warm (not hot!) towels or a heating pad around your face.
- Take over-the-counter decongestants and/or pain relievers to provide temporary relief from symptoms.
- Keep your sinus cavities moist by taking warm showers or inhaling over a bowl of steaming water.
